Our Ministry Philosophy

The Student Ministry team is here to encourage, support, and help facilitate the spiritual formation of youth (7th-12th grade) by walking alongside students and their families as they navigate the teenage years together. We believe that God intends to use parents, grandparents, and other influential adults to teach youth primarily in the home.  Our goal is to encourage youth to dig into God's word and help parents feel equipped to have gospel conversations with their teenagers.

Meet our Student Ministry Staff

Jake Rhoton
Minister to Students

About Jake:
In his spare time, Jake enjoys spending time with his wife, playing sports, hunting, and various athletic activities. The quote that most defines his philosophy on life comes from the Westminster Shorter Catechism, “Man’s chief end is to glorify God, and to enjoy Him forever.” His favorite Bible verse is 1 John 4:8, “The one who does not love does not know God, for God is love.”
Jake's words:
I see that it is evident that Columbus Avenue stands on the word of God and does not shy away from that in any instance. My heart in ministry is to live life with students, whether that is dealing with heartache or rejoicing alongside them when something great happens in their world. I believe that the most important thing a student hears is the Word of God.

Cecily McIlwain
Girls Student Associate

About Cecily:
Cecily is an MDiv student at Baylor's Truett Seminary. She enjoys reading, watching movies, listening to really weird music, and hanging out at Cameron Park. Her favorite thing about ministry is seeing God working in student's lives and developing their gifts for gospel ministry.
